Passengers of the Chicago Transit Authority can be reassured that their commute is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. The CTA has increased precautionary and preventive measures to keep passengers as safe as possible.
Some of the measures directly combat the spread of COVID-19 in accordance with government health regulations. CTA staff are thoroughly and frequently sanitizing contact surfaces of buses and trains. New signage throughout public transportation encourages riders to wear face masks.
The CTA has also committed to the circulation of information related to emergency evacuation procedures via brochures and videos.
While the pandemic has threatened public transportation use amidst efforts to social distance, many people are still utilizing it, though night transits have decreased.
Samia Ali, a student who frequents the CTA, said that passengers are continuing to look out for their own safety. Abstaining from phone use, sharing travel routes with loved ones and carrying pepper spray are ways that Ali stays alert and safe.
The Chicago Police Department also has an online service for riders to report accidents, offenders and general community concerns about their transit experiences.
