City Colleges Releases Updated Scholarship List

A new list of scholarships has been approved and recommended by faculty members for students enrolled at City Colleges of Chicago. Many of the scholarships are fit for students graduating in spring and transferring to a 4-year college.

About half of the scholarships have been approved by the Harold Washington College Local 1600 Teacher’s Union and are in honor or memory of recent members of Harold Washington College (HWC).

The Thomas J. McBride and Albert Soglin scholarships are two of said scholarships. Thomas J. McBride was a Harold Washington student who passionately attended HWC and Albert Soglin was a long-time HWC unionist and math professor. Similarly, the Edward S. Orzac Scholarship was created in memory of Dr. Orzac, who taught medicine and Asian history as a professor in India, Afghanistan, and Indonesia.

Both the Thomas J. McBride and Albert Soglin scholarships offer between $500 and $1000 in funds while The Edward S. Orzac Scholarship will offer a $1000 scholarship to eligible undocumented students.

Ellen Goldberg, the Director of the Transfer Center at HWC, recommends particular scholarships for students transferring from HWC. These scholarships can be applied for students who are graduating near summer and fall of 2021. One of these scholarships is the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship, providing $40,000 per year for 3 years.

Goldberg also recommend The Dream US Scholarship for students who identify as undocumented DACA recipients. Students will get $16,500 per year if they transfer to an approved local university partner.

“These scholarships are life-changing in different ways,” said Goldberg. “Often, students become part of a thriving network of scholars by winning any of them.”

Students who have remaining questions about scholarships are advised to contact their academic advisor or Ellen Goldberg at the HWC Transfer Center.
