Harold Washington College (HWC) celebrated Women’s History Month in April with a series of events spearheaded by the Department of Student Activities and Humanities Department.

The event kicked off with a women's suffrage lecture, facilitated by HWC’s own Monice Purnell and hosted by the Executive Vice President of the League of Women Voters, Catherine Mardikes. It addressed the political significance that women hold and the connection between the suffrage movement of the 1800’s and America’s most recent election.

The Department of Student Activities and Humanities 205 hosted the World of Literature event, a poetry and spoken word forum focused on women’s and sexuality topics. The event also included alumni and nationally published writer Jeremy Kinola.

HWC’s Women's, Gender and Sexuality associates pathway has been in existence for one full year, accumulating immense support from faculty, staff and students.

With this pathway, Humanities professor Jennifer Wilson hopes that students will take the tools that they receive from these courses and use them in their everyday lives.

“The ultimate goal is to help students become passionate in advocating for intersectional social injustices, in order to identify the importance of their own agencies,” Wilson said.
